Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 31 (Volume 31): Joining the Fray

HxH Vol. #31: "Joining the Fray" Review
Amazing volume with some great moments! Volume #31, "Joining the Fray", introduces Killua's sister, Alluka. She has the power to grant wishes, but it comes with some nasty consequences. This adds so much more depth to the plot, just as you'd expect from Yoshihiro Togashi. Killua sets his sister free from the most guarded area of the Zoldyck mansion and tries to use her power to save Gon, who is in a coma as a result of the previous arc. The vote for the new chairman hots up in this issue too, with some old faces make an unexpected appearance as candidates. This volume is another awesome addition to the Hunter X Hunter series and is a great read.

Consigliato!

Fantastic Character-Development and Story
Hunter x Hunter has always been a very distinctive manga compared to other Shonen manga's. Its world is not about one particular thing, you would think its just all about Hunters, but its also about Assassins, Elections, the Mafia, video game worlds, fighting tournaments, magical beasts, and auctions. Manga's like Naruto or One Piece have this very focused and simple story-telling where its mostly about fighting, friendship leads to power, and who could blow up the bigger continent. Hunter x Hunter gives off extremely descriptive dialogue about how to hunt, make money, make food, things that involve what we do in real life only with a more creative and complex way of expanding and improving upon it.The world isn't set in feudal japan, or in a life of piracy, or in a land of demons, but a very hard-to-describe world with many different type of of qualities and quantities that we actually only have scratched the surface of; the real world in Hunter x Hunter is a whole lot bigger than one would think from previous volumes (this has been confirmed in volume 32). The characters are astonishing, you begin to know exactly what they are capable of, their potential for future heights, and how they begin to learn and grow on this wonderful world of not just action/combat, but adventure and the unknown. The villains is also what makes this story so endearing, the bad guys are not ones who will try to destroy the world when they have the chance and the power to do so, but only attack and do the things they want to do for themselves; they are entirely self-interested and this is the greatest feature ever so notable in the story. The concept of Nen is complex and fun to engage, the battles are very fun, fast-paced, and not so overly-exaggerated like most (or all) Manga's in the Shonen category. This volume is about the election of a new chairman of the hunters association after the previous chairman died from a amazing battle with the chimera ant king, Meruem. While Killua, the deuteragonist of the story, needs to save Gon the protagonist. The art of Hunter x Hunter is very simple and at the time detailed. At the beginning it was somewhat bland and could use more work, but now, especially in this volume, the art/animation is very graceful and pleasing to the eye. Personally I adore Hunter x Hunter's art than the crazy hard-to-grasp styles of most Manga's in general. The art covers are some of the best covers you'll see in a while. This is a highly-recommended series to read and personally, my favorite manga series ever. You must buy this.

A big brothers struggle
There really isn't any other score I could give this book. As a lifelong fan of manga, Hunter X Hunter is my favorite series, without question. Despite the frequent, lenghty, and totally unjustifiable hiatuses, there hasn't been a series to come along that I feel has surpassed Hunter. If anything you can see the influence the series has had on modern manga; I only wish they also copied its consistency.Hunter 31 introduces us to another of Killua Zoldyck's, the co-protagonist, illusive and mysterious family members. His sister, Alluka, has an ability of astounding and horrifying power, and it is the only thing that can save his best friend, Gon Freecs, from his self inflicted plight. For a series 300+ chapters in to be able to deliver an arc unlike anything it has done before is unheard of. This volume feature the tense cat and mouse chase between Killua and his oppressive older brother who wants nothing more than to control Alluka through Killua. The highlight, for me, in this volume is the return of Hisoka the magician, a fan favorite who was absent for the entirety of the lengthy ant invasion arc. He is back and more dangerous than ever, showing that he is exactly as dangerous as we've always believed him to be. Illumi, free of any rules or restrictions, is truly heartless and proves it time and again in this arc.My favorite part of this volume however has to be the relationship between Killua and Alluka. It is equal parts heart warming and rending at the same time, a balance that Togashi seems to excel at. The hunter election is still quite prominent, but it is seamlessly woven into the larger Zoldyck conflict to brutal effect. This should go without saying, but this is not the volume to jump into the series with. For a series as deep and complex as Hunter X Hunter, start at the beginning or not at all. Volume 31 reaffirms why Yoshihiro Togshi has become the blueprint from which all other shonen writers copy from, while at the same time reminding us to never accept imitators. You can't copy perfection. A must buy.
