Another satisfying mystery!
Peter James has again found an interesting criminal pursuit to explore. While most people know about identity theft and the negative complications it visits upon the victim, the Internet Romance fraud explored in this novel may be something new.The story brings back Roy Grace’s team of varied police characters and his nemeses, including his boss and an international hit man who escaped thanks to Roy’s boss’ poor judgment. We learn more about Roy’s family, including his newly met son, Bruno, who is a conundrum to Roy and Cleo. The mystery involves identifying the numerous tendrils of crime involved in the Internet fraud and exploring the devastating experiences had by the victims. We also learn of the causative backgrounds of some of those running the fraudulent schemes, touching on the terrible consequences of the violence so prevalent in today’s world. The story has an understated but satisfying conclusion with promise of more Roy Grace stories to come.

Peter James at the top of his game
I have changed my previous policy of giving light, recreational reading a maximum of 4 stars. (you may upgrade pre-2019, 4-star reviews to 5 stars retroactively.) Now all books are eligible for 5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. Good story, solid characters, great dialogue. Plot is advanced by nuance and dialogue rather than pure exposition. Narrative expertly draws the reader into the story, making it difficult to pause the reading. The villains are wicked without being perverted. They prey upon trusting people who fall in love on internet dating sites. I do not remember any disturbing sexual or violent scenes, and thought the language was realistic without being unnecessarily profane or obscene. Your tolerance may vary. I have enjoyed all of the books in this series, some more than others. This one is tops.

The story starts on page one
Very good read! No page long descriptions of anything or anybody. We get to know the characters from the story and what we need to know about the scenery without fuss. Interesting and exciting from front to back.My kind of crime novel.

A little complicated
I look forward to each new Roy Grace novel and enjoyed this one too, but....there were so many characters that it got a little confusing at times and there were bits that made no sense. Johnny has lost everything in a scam, can’t pay his mortgage, but can pay for a last minute transAtlantic flight to accomplish something that could have been done via FaceTime. I am disturbed at how little attention is being paid to Bruno who obviously has serious problems. Grace keeps getting interrupted as he tries to deal with him, yet accepts a job that will add hours to his commute which dumps the problem of Bruno on Cleo. I’m also troubled by how peripheral a character Cleo is becoming. These are all fixable problems and I hope to see some of them resolved in the next installment.

A. Book that I was expecting this year
An extremely realistic and authentic plot for which I was surprised to read just how common internet romance fraud is these days, as well as its catastrophic consequences !

Well worth a read!
I'm always eager to get my hands on the latest Peter James novel, and this was no exception. I did enjoy it - Peter's writing is very easy to get into and in no time at all, I find myself hooked and needing to know what's going to happen next. I did however, find that this book involved quite a 'character dump' in the first few chapters and so was a little harder to follow initially than most of his books. Some fascinating stuff though e.g. 'Google Reverse Image Search'... who would have thought? I had no idea that this was even possible (and now find myself torn between curious and too scared to check whether my image is being abused anywhere online!)
