No, Mac's are to hard. Look for a Crack-a-mac they work great.

Q: Does this work on hickory nuts?

The cracking space of the "mushroom" nutcracker will fit hickory nuts to crack it. Personally I didn't have chance to crack hickory nuts. Please try it, and if not working please feel free to return it. Bon appetite !

Q: How does nutcracker work? Does not go up and down like it should.

You turn the darker top part of the mushroom and it screws down into the nut. I bought it to do hickory nuts. The nuts turned out to be harder than the wood this was made of, and cracked the nutcracker.
