Q: Can I place the volume controller between the headphone amplifier and the headphones or will it get damaged by the current?

Neither. It is a high impedance potentiometer (50k) that will not work well at all in a low impedance headphone circuit. It won't be damaged because only minimal current will flow, and it will not have the range to properly adjust the volume. It is designed for use in high impedance (low current) circuits such as between a preamp and power amp. You could use it to control the signal to a headphone amp, but most headphone amps already have a level control.

It varies. It's a pot. 0-50k ohm.

I cant compare to the Schiit passive pre-amp, but I can compare to the schiit fulla 2 pot. This feels more solid. It is super linear end to end. Scales really well. Lots of travel for the bottom of the range, and balanced all the way down. Pot on the Fulla 2 was noisy/scratchy, very little travel on the bottom end, and a little unbalanced at low levels. From a tear down of the Schiit SYS it uses a lower end alps pot compared to this one, comparable to the model down from this?

Q: If I have a turntable with a built in preamp, is this possible to use between it and the active speakers solely as volume control, since it's passive?

That is a great use case for this. Since it is all passive, it is all attenuation, so you will need to make sure your preamp + poweramp together meet or exceed the top volume you want to listen at. All this can do is control how much you lower the signal. That's about the only thing I would caution on.
