These wraps saved the day

These wraps actually saved me in a situation with my rescued unneutered male Chihuahua who'd been living in an apartment with a senior for his whole life (4 years) never going outside and with no socialization at all. Although I was told he was paper trained, when he came to my house where I had another male dog, he became territorial and began "marking" everywhere to the point where I had to cover everything in huge plastic sheets, was constantly cleaning up and was miserable living like that. I also didn't know what I was going to do as despite my reading everything I could find and trying to train him plus taking him outside all the time, he continued to mark. I read about these wraps and tried them and while they don't solve the problem completely, they make it bearable and I can actually live in my house again, plastic free and clean. He now knows what to do when I take him outside and is very good about it, but he continues to occasionally try to mark inside because the underlying smell that only dogs can smell never goes away despite using specialty products. Consequently, he wears the wrap anytime he's in the house (although I do take it off when he's sitting right next to me as I can keep an eye on him). I also buy packages of the 1/2" thick feminine pads at the dollar store and cut them in half to insert in the crotch area as the fabric inside the wrap isn't enough plus with frequent washing, it becomes compacted and lumpy. I have half a dozen of these wraps as they start to show wear plus it ensures I always have a clean one available. My little guy is also very good about letting me put it on him - not knowing he looks pretty silly and why they have to be bright turquoise instead of a “dog color” is a mystery. The only thing I have to keep an eye on is when a wrap is new, the elastic can be a little tight and can cause a friction spot by his leg joint, but pulling on the elastic after washing and a dab of Neosporin heals it very quickly. As I said, it doesn't solve the problem completely as wearing the wrap is almost giving him "permission" to mark inside, but when he simply won't stop after 3 years of being with me and all my efforts to change his behavior plus being neutered now, these wraps saved the day. My Chihuahua weighs about 10 pounds, is 18” around his middle and I buy size Small. It’s a little snug, but it still fits and a medium would be way too big for him.

Lifesaver!

These diapers are a lifesaver if you have an older dog who can't "hold it" anymore. Or a puppy who isn't potty trained yet. I put them on my dog when he's left alone in the house all day, just in case he can't hold it. Usually he makes it, but every once in a while, he uses the diaper and it makes me SO glad that he had it on. These diapers really are a wonderful invention. But there's a couple of things to be aware of...1. The company's sizing is off (unless they've recently updated their sizes). My 12 pound toy poodle wears a medium. Originally, I tried a small, but it was teeny tiny. I think the small would work for dogs around 5 or 6 pounds. The medium is probably good for dogs around 10 to 15 pounds. Maybe a little bigger, but you don't want the elastic to be too tight on your dog's belly. There's a little leeway because the diaper closes with Velcro strips that are about an inch wide, so if it's a little tight, don't overlap the Velcro all the way, or it it's a little loose, try overlapping the Velcro farther over. I would recommend buying one to see if the sizing works for your dog, then if it does, buy a few more so you're not doing laundry all the time. They're not supposed to go in the dryer, but I put mine in the dryer. I think they shrank up a little, but not too much. And they probably get more "worn out" looking from the dryer, but I'm lazy, haha.2. These are NOT disposable diapers that are designed to soak up urine. They are meant to be used with a pad inside the diaper... the pad soaks up the urine, then you throw the pad away and if any urine got on the diaper, throw it in the wash. They make special pads to put in the diaper but they're pretty expensive, so I use an "overnight" maxi pad. The biggest kind they make. The kind with wings helps to secure the pad in place. You can get 30 for around five bucks. Just make sure when you put the diaper on your dog that the pad is right over his weiner... if he pees on the cloth part, it will soak right through. The pad is essential. The diaper "wrap" is just to hold the pad in place. I bought a diaper pail and I put the used pad in a plastic baggy, then throw it in the diaper pail to contain the urine smell. I think they make a similar type of pail for used cat litter. Then change the diaper pail when it starts getting ripe, haha. Good luck!
