Fluke ST240+ Socket Tester

I have or did have a martingale tester, but after moving house, it’s somewhere in a box! Saw this and having fluke meters realised it should be good quality. So thought I would treat myself. It is a nice and compact kit, does what it promises, and leds are nice and bright. I like the additional sounder to make it a handy check for a power supply. Easy to use, and an added bonus it has a rcd trip test button. Comparing it to other socket testers, it is good value and a good safety tool. So will have to see how long it works for.

For a simple wiring check of your sockets, this works really well. I bought it as a quick diagnostic tool and it did reveal one mistake that I did that I wouldn’t have spotted otherwise.Glad I bought it, even though it is not the cheapest option. The build quality is great too, as it is to be expected by the FLUKE brand.

I was fitting some extra sockets, and replacing a couple of others on the same radial circuit. I'm a reasonably competent DIYer, but I thought it prudent to invest in a tester to check my work (and also check that the existing sockets were sound before extending the circuit). I'm glad that I did! First check after the power went back on revealed something amiss with two of the additional twin sockets. Checked these, and they were actually wired ok, but further investigation revealed a couple of loose wires further back along the circuit. Fixed this, and all was then well. So the tester paid for itself first time out.It is more expensive than some others, but the Fluke build quality is immediately apparent. It's very solidly made with a reassuring chunky feel. This is going to survive in a busy toolbox. The switch to turn the buzzer on and off is useful, as is the RCD test button. My only criticism is that the buzzer (actually more of a very high-pitched whine) could be louder. You'd have to have bat-ears to hear this if you were switching off the power from a couple of rooms away.

Not much you can say about socket testers as they either work or they don't. I looked at many different types but settled on this one due to the Fluke reputation, it's features, and its size. It might be very expensive compared to some but quality and good design costs. I've experienced cheap Chinese PSU's and come across trapped wires, poor load rating, and bendy or easily broken plug prongs. None of those things are what you want to see in a socket tester. If you need reliable testing you won't go far wrong with Fluke.

Sorted; buy a Fluke!Very happy with this socket tester, you can achieve 90% of the functionality with a cheap unit over the counter but you get what you pay for with Fluke and it's solid feeling, bright yellow and lets you shut off the awful noise these quick testers make.It's no replacement for an MFT but it's a useful indicator that everything's working fine (or not!)
