A great product at a great price

A great product at a great price. Believe it or not, my last multi-meter was over 30 years old when it finally failed! I hope this one lasts as long. So far, no complaints.

This Meter is Accurate and Comes with a Protective Sleeve, Storage Pouch, Leads and Batteries

The media could not be loaded. This is a great little meter and it gets five stars. The meter is supplied in a nicely illustrated cardboard box with a very good book of instructions. It would make a lovely present for anybody interested in hobby electronics, automobile maintenance, or DIY electrics. The meter is supplied with a pair of test leads, a zipper case and two “Duracell” AAA batteries. The leads have insulated caps that increase their rating from “Cat II” to “Cat III”. CAT III Rating is a safety category than defines the level of protection and the types of electrical environments in which test equipment can be safely used. The CAT III rating is associated with lower-voltage distribution systems, typically up to 600V. For use on low voltage circuits these caps can be removed.Unlike most multimeters this Tesmen model does not have a rotary switch to select the functions. A unique “Auto” mode is selected whenever the meter is turned on, which is done by pressing the power button for a few seconds. Auto mode analyses the circuit the probes are connected to and automatically selects the correct range; connect it to a resistor and it shows the resistance, connect it to a battery and it displays the DC voltage, connect it to the mains and it shows the AC voltage, etc. The Auto mode however only works for the first four of the nine settings and it can be confused by what it is connected to. For serious measurements it is probably better to chose the specific range you want to use and the following are available by pressing the “Func” (function) button to cycle through them:AC Volts, DC Volts, Resistance, Continuity, Frequency, Capacitance, Diode Forward Voltage, Non Contact Volts, Live.I tested the accuracy of the Tesmen meter against an Avo Model 8 MkII analogue multimeter and it was good. The Tesmen had ranges that could only be dreamed of in the days of the Avo and the capacitance and diode forward voltage readings had to be accepted at face value based on the data on the components being measured. Resistance measurements were spot on and capacitance measurements seemed accurate over a range of sizes and formulations. The forward voltage drop measured on different types of diode was also as expected.Measuring the frequency of the mains showed it to be 50Hz which is reassuring as it has to be in the range 49.5-50.5Hz! To push the frequency function further I connected it to the headphone output from my PC and played a test recording. The video shows the results and as you can see the measurements were very accurate. The continuity range emits a buzzing sound from the meter whenever the resistance between the probes is less than 50 ohms and is useful for tracing connections. To use the Live mode requires a single probe and whenever this is touched on a live conductor the buzzer sounds. The NCV setting does away with the probes altogether and the meter buzzes whenever the top of it is near to live mains conductors. It acts like a metal detector, but for electricity, and can find cables in walls. Like a metal detector its performance is sometimes questionable. I show it in operation in the video. The meter does not measure current. This a disadvantage, because measuring current is important in circuit analysis and fault finding, but also an advantage because measuring current is the most common reason why multimeters are destroyed - leaving them on a current scale when measuring voltage is almost certain to blow them up! I see from the instructions that resistance, capacity and frequency all have an overload protection of 250V which should give some defence against accidental voltages from charged capacitors, and resistors in live circuits, further prolonging the life of the meter. Two other buttons are on the front of the meter. The “H” (hold) button freezes the display so you can take note of the reading and the “Light” turns the meter into a low powered torch. The screen on this Tesmen meter is clear with a bright, large text, display. It is optimised for viewing on a bench as readings are being taken. Viewed directly, or from slightly above, the screen darkens as is usual with liquid crystal displays. As mentioned earlier the meter comes with a zipped storage pouch that holds it along with the probes. The meter itself is enclosed in a protective rubberised sleeve which leaves only the screen vulnerable to damage. When received the screen was protected by a removable plastic film and to see the display in its full glory I took this off. I would recommend leaving it on, if you can live with it, as the surface of the screen looks like it could easily get scratched. For less than ten pounds this is excellent value for money. The only thing I wished they had added would be a pair of crocodile clips for component testing.I am going to use this meter for low voltage electronic projects and automotive maintenance. I would not recommend it for continual use on mains circuits, especially in hard to reach areas and up ladders etc. There is a reason why professional multimeters cost hundreds of pounds and it is safety not accuracy.

Nice toy

The media could not be loaded. ●for a diy-er this is a quite helpful tool and personally I like it but as an advise for everyone, put safety first, when using it for high voltage measurements better to test several times and also check with a electric screwdriver too, to see if there is still electrical power as I've noticed that sometimes is not very accurate. Anyway when used on NVC sometimes it shows that there is a live cable when it isn't but never the otherwise.●super easy to use even for someone who is not familiar with as it has automatic detection mode, that can measure AC/DC voltages, resistance and continuity but it can be put on manual too for all other measurements (diode, capacitance, frequency, NCV and live wire. The Multimeter can be used with the cable provided or non contact measurements to check live cables in the walls even in dark environments as its display is wel illuminated and on the back it has a flash light.●pack contains the multimeter, a rubber case, 2 test leads, a storage bag to keep everything together and free of damages, 1 users manual and even 2AAA batteries, so everything is included.
